Ninja Foodi Beef Stew

I LOVE beef stew and cannot believe that my fussy dad doesn’t entertain a stew, because they are one of my all time favourite comfort foods.

I love to visit the market, pick out my favourite root vegetables and take the ingredients home to make a stew. It doesn’t have to beef either. I love venison stew, rabbit stew, chicken stew or pork stew.

My favourite vegetables to go into a beef stew are carrots, swede (what Americans call rutabaga) and parsnips. Though when I can’t source parsnips and swede it is usually carrots, leeks and turnips.

I realised that most of the time I make a beef stew without potatoes. I would rather fill it up with swede than potatoes and find that it makes it hearty without the need for the humble spud.

If you follow a Whole30, Paleo etc diet, then note that this Ninja Foodi beef stew is potato free and just leave out the frozen peas and you have your healthy stew.

Can You Make Beef Stew In Ninja Foodi?

Yes, you can. Note that the Ninja Foodi is also an electric pressure cooker and has a pressure cooker button that is ideal for cooking your favourite beef stew.

Also, because the pressure cook option on the Ninja Foodi is like the instant pot, you can also swap this recipe for some of our other instant pot beef stew recipes including:

  • Instant Pot Tuscan Bean Stew
  • Instant Pot Campfire Stew
  • Instant Pot Scottish Beef Stew + Dumplings
  • Instant Pot Irish Beef Stew With Guinness
  • Instant Pot Beef Stew + Dumplings

Keep the exact same cook times and methods and make them in the Ninja Foodi.

Ninja Foodi Stew Meat

You can use any meat you want in the Ninja Foodi. But a great option is some cubed steak. When you have some leftover braising steak that has been cubed at the butchers, or as they call it in the US chuck roast.

You can buy it whole or already cubed or just use up your leftovers.

I often buy a chuck roast (same as a braising roast) for cooking in the Instant Pot. But I will find that the piece I have is too big for the instant pot and I will trim some off the end.

Those little ends I will keep in a freezer bag and then when I have enough, I will make a beef stew.

Even though any cubed beef can be used as your Ninja Foodi stew meat, go with the cheaper cuts. Pressure cooking makes your beef very tender and there is no point wasting expensive cuts of meat in the pressure cooker.

How I Keep My Beef Stew Gluten Free

I have a pouring technique that I do when making beef stew and other stews and casseroles. When the food is cooked I will strain the excess liquid like this:

Then I will load it back into the Ninja Foodi cooking pot.

Then I will grab a mesh strainer and from the fat and stock leftover I will strain it and then add back in fat free creamy beef stock.

By doing this, which only takes a couple of minutes, I will not have to thicken up the stew I can just stir. Or if I want it thicker, I will then get out the hand blender and blend some of the veggies and then stir.

I love this because not only are you reducing your fat content, but you are using veggies and stock as your thickener, not corn starch.

If you want to cook beef stew in Ninja Foodi this is how you do it:

  1. Brown your onion and beef.
  2. Season your beef.
  3. Add vegetables.
  4. Pressure cook.
  5. Drain + stir + serve.

How Long To Cook Beef Stew In Ninja Foodi?

The ideal cook time for a big cooking pot of beef stew in the Ninja Foodi is one hour. This means that your meat will be very tender and will fall apart as you tuck into your beef stew.

No need to worry that your beef stew is not going to be tender, as after an hour it is perfect.

Does Meat Get More Tender The Longer You Pressure Cook It?

Yes, it does. I have found that the beef is cooked in the pressure cooker after 30 minutes. But to make your meat more tender you need to cook it for an hour.

But if you left it in for 75 minutes instead it would still be just as tender.

Notes

Peas. You don’t have to add peas, but I find that peas help bulk it up for a frugal family dinner.

Seasoning. You will lose some of the flavour after pressure cooking. Do a taste test and add extra seasoning if you feel it needs it.
