Can it be cleaned so that we can see what it was meant to look like? • (7 votes) Steven Zucker 10 years agoPosted 10 years ago. Direct link to Steven Zucker's post “Cleaning a painting is a ...” Cleaning a painting is a labor intensive undertaking and can fundamentally change the way we see and even understand a work of art. Cleaning can bring a painting closer to its original state but it will not return it to that original state. On rare occasions mistakes are made that can do permanent damage. And keep in mind that the Night Watch is a national symbol. Edward M. Van Court 9 years agoPosted 9 years ago. Direct link to Edward M. Van Court's post “I think this painting is ...” I think this painting is hard to understand unless the viewer appreciates the immediacy of the threat that the militia was formed to defend against. Spain was occupying half of the Netherlands at the time this was painted. The occupation was religious as well as politcal an economic as the Dutch were mostly Protestant and the Spainiards were trying to impose Catholicism on them. Captain Cocq was an affluent, leading citizen, but he also was important to the defence of the city against an imminent threat. • (7 votes) CielAllen08 9 years agoPosted 9 years ago. These men had probably never been in a real battle in their lives. (7 votes) Giora Katz 7 years agoPosted 7 years ago. Direct link to grace jiang's post “The actual name is "The C...” The actual name is "The Company of captain Frans Banning Cocq and lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch preparing to march out." In the 18th century the painting mistakenly became known as the "Night Watch" because it was darkened by grime. In addition, these people were not exactly watchmen - they met in groups for recreational activities. Apparently, when the painting was cleaned, journalists did call it the "Day Watch" when they saw its original brightness. (4 votes)Want to join the conversation?
and learn "Despite Rembrandt's financial success as an artist, teacher, and art dealer, his penchant for ostentatious living forced him to declare bankruptcy in 1656. An inventory of his collection of art and antiquities, taken before an auction to pay his debts, showed the breadth of Rembrandt's interests: ancient sculpture, Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings, Far Eastern art, contemporary Dutch works, weapons, and armor. Unfortunately, the results of the auction - including the sale of his house - were disappointing."
