Charting Outcomes in the Match, 2022:These biennial reports highlight the characteristics of students and graduates that contribute to a program’s overall assessment of an applicant. Ten to twelve measures are examined in the reports, including the number of contiguous ranks in preferred specialty, the number of distinct specialties ranked, USMLE®Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores (for U.S. MD seniors and IMGs), COMLEX-USA®Level 1 and Level 2-CE scores (for U.S. DO seniors), and the numbers of research experiences, publications, and work and volunteer experiences.

Research Briefs

Research Brief:Content Evaluation of the National Resident Matching Program Applicant Survey: Reflections on Process and Lessons Learned This Research Brief outlines the findings from a NRMP initiative to engage in a comprehensive assessment of its surveys, identifying which pieces of the surveys are most critical and valuable to constituents versus those that might convey limited information or be redundant. The goals of these efforts were to maximize the information obtained from the surveys, and potentially inform changes to the surveys in the future, while also being considerate of respondent burden.

Research Brief: Virtual Experience and Holistic Review in the Transition to Residency: An Examination of the 2021 and 2022 Main Residency Matches
This Research Brief presents general findings on questions added to the 2021 and 2022 Applicant and Program Director Surveys targeting the virtual experience as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Brief also examines program responses to holistic review questions added to the Program Director Survey in 2022.

Research Brief:Applicant Demographics and the Transition to Residency: It’s Time to Leverage Data on Preferred Specialty and Match Outcomes to Inform the National Conversation about Diversity and Equity in Medical Education This Research Brief outlines the NRMP’s demographic data collection effort and highlights select first-year findings from initial analyses of ten specialties. The Brief also provides takeaways, including how the first-year findings provide new insight into and perspective on the current state of diversity and equity in medical education.
