Tofu, A.K.A.bean curd, is a food made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks. The resulting blocks can soft, firm, or extra firm. Its got a subtle flavor and is often seasoned or marinated to suit the dish being made. Usually, tofu is something that people either love or hate. I was on team hate for quite some time. That is, until I started dating myhusband a decade ago. We had just started dating when he offered to make me Pad Thai. When I got to his house I realized he was making it with tofu (say what?!). Since I didn't want to disappoint him, I sheepishly ate my meal. To my complete surprise, I liked it! I quickly made the jump to team tofu and the rest is history.

If you're looking to make the leap into incorporating tofu into your diet, I've rounded up some tofu recipes for beginners that I think you'll love.

FAQs

How do you use tofu for beginners? ›

Medium Firm Tofu works well in casseroles, soups, salads, or when you are in doubt of the firmness you need. Use Firm and Extra Firm Tofu (least amount of water) for crumbling, stir-frying, grilling, and deep-frying.

What is the best tofu to start with? ›

Extra-firm tofu: Consider extra-firm tofu the all-purpose tofu that holds its shape well and is excellent for slicing and cubing. It's an ideal choice for pan-frying, stir-frying, baking, grilling, and scrambling.

What is the secret to cooking tofu? ›

First, drain and press the tofu.

For the best texture, press the tofu using a tofu press or cast-iron skillet for 20 to 30 minutes. If you're short on time, just drain the tofu and gently press it in a kitchen towel or paper towels over the sink. The tofu won't be as firm this way, but it will still be delicious!

How do I learn to eat tofu? ›

This excess water can cause the tofu to crumble when you cook it, and it will also have a hard time crisping up. But when you press tofu, you remove the excess moisture. It takes on a chewier, firmer texture, which makes it super satisfying to eat and less likely to fall apart.

Can I eat tofu raw? ›

What should I marinate tofu in? ›

In a mixing bowl or measuring cup with a spout, whisk together the marinade: soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, olive oil, sesame oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ginger, and Sriracha. Drizzle over the tofu. If any pieces look bare, turn them over in the marinade a few times so all of the sides are coated.

After removing the tofu from its package, rinse it and then remove the water. For soft tofu, just drain it and blot it dry; but for medium, firm and extra-firm tofu, simple draining isn't enough—you need to press the water out. Think of it this way: Tofu is porous, like a sponge.
