Author Notes

At the start of every new year (and at the start of each season, too), I like to do a juice fast for 3-5 days. It's a great way to eliminate toxins, nourish the skin and clean out the system. I subsist on a variety of vegetable and fruit juices, and this is a favorite. It's also a great way to start the day, or as an afternoon pick-me-up. The bright flavor harbors a healthy dose of vitamins C and A and anti-inflammatory ginger. —gluttonforlife

What You'll Need

Ingredients
  • 3 ripe, juicy pears
  • 1 large fennel bulb, trimmed and fronds removed
  • 1 large bunch watercress
  • 1 2" knob of ginger
  • 1 lemon
Directions
  1. Slice the pears and fennel bulb into quarters.
  2. Pare the peel and pith from the lemon, and slice in half.
  3. Run all ingredients through a juicer. Pour into 2 tall glasses and drink immediately. (You may want to serve with a tall spoon or swizzle stick as juice will separate if not drunk right away.)

I'm just getting into juicing (after buying it every morning at the local juice spot) and am looking into Breville as an option. However, I have a tiny NYC kitchen that I use a lot a lot, so everything has to count space-wise. Is there a smaller version of a juicer you might recommend?

I feel your pain as I, too, have a tiny kitchen but it's all about priorities, right? When I lived in the city I used to store my juicer in the oven! Breville does make something called a "compact" juicer, but I don't know how much smaller it is, nor if it's equally effective. Maybe you can scour reviews online? My latest obsession is the Hurom Slow Juicer, btw. Good luck and happy juicing!

I just made this! It was fantastic! also added a few asparagus...
I use the champion juicer, have had it over 20 years and it is still going strong!

OK, I have to say I never do juice fasts, but I do love fresh juices of all kinds, and these ingredients are some of my all-time favorites. I've never seen them all in one drink before, so this also seems quite unique. I'd love to try it--I just have to find someone who owns a juicer now. Happy new year. Good luck in the contest.

If you love fresh juice, you might want to consider investing in a juicer. I use mine EVERY DAY! See below, where I recommended a somewhat pricey one from Breville that has stood the test of time in my kitchen.

I love Breville--I have a blender of theirs that I can also use in place of a food processor on some ingredients. It's the greatest. So, I'm not surprised you recommend a Breville juicer. I am so lazy about things like disassembly, cleaning up, etc., though. I have to admit that if it's a pain to maintain, it's probably not going to end up in my kitchen for some time. Awful of me, I know, but space is also at such a premium in my shoebox NYC kitchen! Still, I do dream about fresh juice on a daily basis. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers.

Yeah, juice is kind of a lifestyle choice. :-) It's not really a pain to maintain as long as you have a good stiff brush on hand to clean the filter. If you're interested, I write more about it on my blog. Enjoy!

Beautiful! What juicer do you use?

gluttonforlife January 1, 2010

The Breville Juice Fountain Elite--I highly recommend it!
